SR-22 Insurance
SR-22 Insurance Information
Texas law places a heavy emphasis on driver safety. Drivers who frequently break traffic laws will face penalties. These might include the requirement to get a Texas SR-22 certificate. SR-22 penalties impose strict insurance requirements on drivers who have to carry them. Remco Insurance can help any SR-22 driver get the right coverage to file for the certificate.
What Is an SR-22?
SR-22s are endorsements that attach to auto policies. They verify for the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) that a driver has active car insurance.
Still, not all drivers have to get SR-22s. They usually only apply to those who commit serious driving offenses and receive high-risk driver designations. Since high-risk drivers are those most at-risk of filing insurance claims, then it is a necessity that they have coverage. The SR-22 makes sure they do.
Why would you need an SR-22?
You might get an SR-22 requirement if you receive a driver’s license suspension from a variety of driving charges. These charges might include:
- Driving without insurance
- DUI or DWI charges
- Causing at-fault accidents
- Receiving multiple tickets
If you get the SR-22 requirement from these offenses, you will have to obtain the certificate and file it with the TxDPS. However, to get the SR-22 in the first place, you will have to get active car insurance.
SR-22 requirements exist because the authorities want to make sure that a high-risk driver has a financial resource available to repay others if they cause accidents.
Is SR-22 insurance full coverage?
SR-22 policies only require the state’s required liability insurance. This is not the same thing as full coverage, however. Still, applicants can usually add other protection to their SR-22 policy, including:
- Collision insurance
- Comprehensive insurance
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist protection
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage
- Roadside assistance, towing protection, rental car coverage
The more coverage you have, the less you might have to pay out-of-pocket following accidents.
Do SR-22s vary?
Certain drivers might have to get specialized SR-22 certificates.
- Drivers who don’t own vehicles, but still drive, might have to get a Non-owner SR-22. They must buy a non-owner car insurance policy to support the SR-22.
- SR-22A certificates don’t allow drivers to pay their policy’s premium month-to-month. You have to pay your premium in at least six-month lumps.[1] Drivers with a history of lapsed insurance often have to get this option.
How Does An SR-22 Affect You?
An SR-22 must be carried for a designated time period, depending on the severity of your violations. Most offenders can expect to have an SR-22 for up to three years. During this time, you must maintain continuous liability coverage. Any break in coverage will be reported to the state, resulting in the suspension of your license. On top of securing adequate insurance, drivers with an SR-22 status should adhere to traffic laws and refrain from driving after alcohol consumption. After the proper fulfillment of this time period, a driver’s SR-22 status will expire, and driving privileges will be restored.
How do you get SR-22 removed?
You must keep the SR-22 attached to your car insurance policy for two years. After that period, it will either drop off your coverage automatically, or you will need to call your insurer to terminate the form. Please note, if you ever let the policy lapse during the SR-22 period, then the SR-22 will expire and you will face further penalties.
If you decide to switch insurance companies during the SR-22 period, speak to your agent about the right course action.
How Much Does An SR-22 Cost?
The cost of premiums varies depending on the severity of your violations. Minor offenses, such as neglecting to pay a parking ticket, are often paired with more affordable policies. However, major offenses, such as drinking under the influence, are more likely to raise your premiums. To get a free quote, call us today for more information on SR-22 insurance.
